Do I need to know Finnish?

Not necessarily. Especially in a region like Ostrobothnia, there are a lot of possibilities to get employed even if you don’t speak Finnish, especially within the businesses of the energy industry. In addition there are several international study programmes to choose from. If you are interested in working in the public sector (for example at a public hospital) not knowing Finnish is somewhat of a problem. In fact, often you’d need to know Swedish as well. On the other hand, if you are interested in learning a new language, you could actually choose either Finnish or Swedish. In most areas of Ostrobothnia you will hear both languages every day - in addition to a bunch of some of the more than 100 other languages spoken in the region. So no, you don’t necessarily need to know Finnish to cope here, but certainly knowing the local language(s) always helps.
